Today was not so busy at work, but the kids in my kids class were BAD.
February 21, 2005 – This kid is messing with me
Posted by Barniferous in Teaching English on February 21, 2015
I was feeling surprisingly good after last night’s party. To make things even better, I was rewarded with 3 empty lessons, making for a nice easy day at work.
One of the lessons I did teach was a one on one kids class. In a nice departure from the norm, the lesson material was WAY too easy for this student. We breezed through the lesson, and I tried to think of a challenging way to keep him occupied and engaged for the rest of the class.
I decided that the classic game “Hangman” was a good option, using words from the lesson material. One of the words I chose was bike. The student got a few letters correct, realized that he almost solved the puzzle, and then started guessing some unlikely letters. Q came out first, then Z, W, X, and other letters that would provide some high scores in Scrabble. I wasn’t quite sure what he was doing, so I kept asking him if he was really sure he wanted to guess those letters. He said yes, so we kept going.
After several more wrong guesses, I finally completed drawing his stick figure on the gallows and told him that he lost. His response was to say “hee hee it’s bike”. He was messing with me the whole time.
It was a refreshing change from a usual kids class where the kids aren’t interested in the material and just run around in circles.
February 4, 2005 – Oni wa soto

I wish I had saved some of the soybeans from Setsubun for my kids class today. They all seemed to be possessed by demons and needed the kind of exorcising that only roasted soybeans can provide.
ONI WA SOTO!!
December 13, 2004 – (Not so) wonderful kids

The injured teacher who was rushed to the hospital a few days ago was back to work today. He was okay to teach in the classroom, but I was asked to teach his kids class to help protect his injured back.
The kids class was full of 8 wonderful children who were very attentive and eager to learn English. They were a pleasure to teach and I think the lesson went very well.
Author’s note: The only thing true about the last two sentences was the number of children.
November 14, 2004 – Hurting

I am hurting today from the party last night. Fortunately my streak of not having a single NOVA kids class since moving to Mishima NOVA continues. A kids class today would NOT have been enjoyable.
October 27, 2004 – One last night with the good kids

Most of the teachers at Kawasaki NOVA are sick, so the schedule keeps changing. I ended up getting one more lesson with my former Wednesday kids class. They were all surprised to see me. It was a nice surprise for everyone.
October 6, 2004 – Last good kids class

Today was the official last day of teaching my Wednesday kids class. Georgia will be taking over the class, so we did a team teach so she could get used to the kids. At the end of the class, I got them to pose for a group picture, and gave them all Canada pencils. I then told them in English (and basic Japanese) that today was my last day teaching them because I was moving to Shizuoka. They all looked really sad. This is the first group of kids that I actually connected with as a teacher, so it was sad for me too.
After my next class, one of the staff told me that some of the students from my class had left a message on the whiteboard for me. I went to the kids classroom and saw that they had filled the entire board with a goodbye message for me. (the picture is above)
For the first time in my year of teaching in Japan, I actually felt like a good kids teacher.
September 25, 2004 – Birth control

Teaching English to children is a very effective form of birth control. Some days they are HORRIBLE.
September 1, 2004 – Too many cameras
Posted by Barniferous in Greater Tokyo Area, Kawasaki Nova on September 1, 2014
Today was my first day back to work after four days off. Urgh! The good news was that I am finally back at Kawasaki NOVA on Wednesdays and have my good kids class back. They were all really great today!
After work I went to buy a digital camera from Yodobashi Camera, which is conveniently located next to Kawasaki NOVA. When I walked into the camera section I realized that I was in completely over my head. There were at least 100 different models in prices ranging from cheap to crazy expensive. I don’t know anything about digital cameras, and my Japanese ability is too limited to have a meaningful conversation with the sales staff. I gave up for the day and went to the internet cafe to do some research. After spending some time online, I think I will be buying a 4 megapixel Sony camera.
Who knew that a camera store in Japan would have so many choices?
August 18, 2004 – Schedule uncorrected
Posted by Barniferous in Karaoke, Teaching English on August 20, 2014
Last week I was happy to learn that I would be back in Kawasaki NOVA on Wednesdays allowing me to teach my good kids class. Today I found out that the schedule had been changed back again after a week. The one time I actually enjoy teaching a kids class…
After work I went to a farewell karaoke party for Scottish Steven. Good times were had by all, and I think I found someone who sings worse than I do!
